The West Moonah Neighbourhood House commenced in 1985 when a group of interested people from West Moonah began to offer organised activities at the local school. After a few years, we found accommodation in an old draughty house, a few streets away from the school. By 1991, we were moved into a brand new house in Springfield Avenue, where we remain today. West Moonah Neighbourhood House is a welcoming place for everyone no matter what your gender, race, religion, age, culture, or educational backgrounds might be. You can participate in one of our many activities, volunteer, or just drop by for a warm place to relax and chat. Neighbourhood Houses play a vital role in local communities, responding to community needs, creating opportunities, supporting people, and encouraging local leadership. The West Moonah Neighbourhood House is one of 36 Neighbourhood Houses in Tasmania, and one of over 1000 Houses and Centres nationally. West Moonah is a residential suburb of Hobart in lutruwita (Tasmania). The House is open to everyone including those from surrounding areas.
Tasmanian Neighbourhood Houses are funded by the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPAC) funding to work from a community development framework within their community. This is achieved by offering programs and courses of interest or identified needs to the community. The funding provided by DPAC is used to cover wages and on-cost expenses for operating the house. Neighbourhood Houses sign a service agreement to secure this funding and would be required to comply with obligations listed by the department. Additional income is sourced from fundraising events, programs, donations, and grants.
The Neighbourhood House is a social hub providing opportunities for the community. The House actively works towards meeting the needs of the community by running health and literacy events, to care for the community’s physical, emotional, and social wellbeing needs. Community lunches to promote healthy eating and social connection. A range of craft, cooking, and exercise classes to develop skills, connection, health, and wellbeing. Many members within our community and surrounding areas are experiencing housing stress and food insecurity the house provides food relief and referrals to assist. The House actively works towards meeting the DPAC framework requirements and more importantly the needs of our community.
The house has a board that works in partnership with the manager, staff, stakeholders and community.
